At the end of the day, like they say, "content is king."

I've found that social bookmarking works, but only if the content matches the site.

i.e. lists work fairly well on Digg, "news with a twist" on Reddit and resource pages on delicious.

It's absolutely worthless if the content is poorly targeted, I've found.

I think they all work. Here are some to think about;

• links from authorities
  • industry associations
    
  • industry message boards & Forums
    
  • industry newsletters (most people publish a copy online)
    
  • Newspapers, Local News Sites
    
  • Wiki's (not spam)
    
  • Industry social networking
    
  • Press releases on major site
• Links from your sphere of influence
  • bloggers that follow you
  • Articles
  • social networking (myspace, facebook, hifive)
• Business Networking
  • chamber sites Member listing site
  • leads groups Member listing site
  • events (torunaments, social, charity, chamber)
  • conferences Member listing site
  • Expos Member listing site
  • Business social networking (linkedin, merchant circle, zoominfo, etc)
• Directories & Search Portals
  • any other search engine (can be seen as a page by a major search engine)
  • any directory (again all they are, just webpages when returned by the browser)
• Link Exchanges (industry related)

You have to be careful about link exchanges, depending on how they are set up they can pretty quickly get you out of good graces with Google.

I really like Dan's "business networking" section. Usually these links are relevant and high quality.

I would really suggest looking into some of the newer information about link directories. For the quality of the links they provide, very few of them are worth it.
